This article was originally written as part of a series called “This Is My Canada”, which featured a variety of bloggers talking about their top 5 sites in Canada. Honestly, after having visited each and every province and territory, putting together a list of just 5 things is almost impossible.

1. The Canadian Rockies

Okay, maybe I’m biased because I live in Calgary, which is less than two hours from this majestic place, but I can honestly say that it is one of the most beautiful places in Canada, if not the world. Think about it. Mountains, lakes, turquoise rivers, picturesque mountain villages, epic walks, waterfalls, glaciers and much more.

First of all, there is no better place for a road trip in Canada. There’s a drive from Calgary to Banff, from Calgary to Vancouver, and from Banff to Jasper on the world-famous Icefields Parkway. Some of Canada’s most famous sites are within the Canadian Rockies, including Banff National Park and Jasper National Park.

2. Vancouver and Vancouver Island

Well, I feel like I’m cheating now. I am squeezing all of Vancouver and Vancouver Island into one of the best things to do in Canada. I told you that choosing only 5 things would be difficult to do. But do not worry. You will thank me if you do BOTH Vancouver and Vancouver islands instead of just one (although if you can do one, make it Vancouver Island). Enough introduction, let’s talk about forests and cities!

Vancouver is the most beautiful city in Canada, if not the world. Sure, it has some rough edges (East Hastings, for example), but for its overall beauty, it can’t be beat. Because it is one of the most densely populated cities on the continent, you will find lots of high-rise buildings surrounded by high mountains and the Pacific Ocean. You can also walk around the concrete jungle one moment and hike in the rainforests the next. It is that kind of city.

3. Northern Canada and the Northern Lights

This is probably the largest region that I have listed in this article. The reason I list it as Northern Canada is because everything is equally great and everything is really “off the beaten path”. If you thought Canada was already in the north, imagine what northern Canada is like. It is like two Europe with almost no people. The Yukon has more wolves than humans. But it is not scary. It’s nice. It is very, very, very beautiful. Launch the Northern Lights and you will have one of the most magical outdoor paradises on Earth.

4. Newfoundland and the Maritimes

Newfoundland is one of our favorite destinations in all of Canada. It was the last province to join the Confederacy and is home to the easternmost point of the country. It is also the most unique province of all with its own unique food, music and culture. It is a very quiet place with many small fishing communities separated by hundreds of kilometers of roads. In fact, some communities are not even connected by road and can only be visited by boat. It is also home to St. John’s, which is the oldest city founded in England in North America, some of the most unique geologies on Earth in Gros Morne National Park, and some of the most breathtaking ocean views ever. you have seen glances at Oh yes, Newfoundland is all that and much more.

5. Montreal and Quebec City

Once again, I left and listed two main cities as one thing to do. I’m ashamed. But it is true, everyone loves the cosmopolitan city of Montreal and the amazing and beautiful historic area of Quebec City. For those who don’t know, Quebec is the only officially French province in Canada. This is what makes it so unique. Montreal is one of the most famous cities in Canada and is often described as the European portion of North America. You can taste history in Old Montreal or walk through the more modern streets that surround the city center. You’ll find amazing Montreal bagels, poutine, and smoked meats, as well as some amazing museums, natural sites, and historic buildings like the Notre Dame Basilica.
