How do I get a student visa for Australia?
International students who want to come to Australia to study need to know how to get a student visa for Australia. To be eligible, the student must have already submitted an unconditional place to an Australian university and must have already accepted the place in writing, as well as paid the required tuition deposit. Australian student visas are required for anyone studying in the country for more than four months and apply to various types of courses, including language courses, undergraduate and postgraduate study programs, and some professional qualifications.
In order for the visa to be accepted by the authorities, the course must be an accredited course. Once a student visa is issued, the holder has the right to remain in Australia for the course period plus 28 days from the day of their last lesson. Multiple courses can be taken under the same visa, but the maximum duration of the course is 50 weeks, with a minimum duration of 12 weeks.
What kind of visa is needed?
There are different types of visas that can be applied for by prospective students who want to come to Australia. Those pursuing vocational training must apply for a visa for Division 572 while those attending undergraduate applications are required for Division 573. Postgraduate students must apply for Subclass 574, while those studying for a course that does not lead to a qualification will need to apply for Subclass 575.
When to apply
Submitting an application is only possible after confirmation of enrollment has been received from the university or course provider. You can submit your application a maximum of 124 days before the start of the course. While some applicants are eligible to apply online, some applicants, depending on their country of origin, must submit a paper application to the Australia High Commission. Please note that it can take up to 4 weeks to process and accept your application, although applying online is faster than the paper application route. Once your application has been accepted, you can travel to Australia with your visa up to 90 days before the course starts.
Unlike the Working Holiday Visa, there is no age limit for anyone applying for an Australian student visa, and those who have already received a Working Holiday Visa for Australia are still eligible to apply.
How much does a student visa cost?
The current price for an Australian student visa is $ 550 AUD and must be paid at the time of application. If you want to bring your dependents to Australia, you must also pay an additional fee unless you apply for visa subclass 574.
Working on a student visa
Students holding an Australian student visa can perform up to 40 hours of work per fortnight during the school period and full-time work during the holiday periods. However, you will not be allowed to start work until the beginning of your course. Any work that is a formal part of your study will not be included in this limit. Voluntary and unpaid work is also not counted within the 40-hour limit if considered for a non-profit organization, it would not be paid work for an Australian resident and if it is beneficial to the community.
Partners can accompany successful requests as long as there is evidence that you have been in a committed relationship for a minimum of one year prior to the request.
